Cotton pads are used throughout the Korean skincare routine in several ways. The most common is toner application: after cleansing, pouring toner onto a cotton pad and pressing it across the face distributes the product more evenly than hands alone and allows a slight exfoliant action from the cotton surface. For toner application: pour toner onto the cotton pad until the pad is saturated but not dripping. Press the pad against the face in gentle sweeping or patting motions rather than rubbing. Rubbing creates friction on skin and wastes toner by pushing it deeper into the cotton rather than onto the skin. Cover the full face including the neck. Use the smooth-side of an embossing pad for gentler coverage, or the textured side for a light exfoliation pass.

For makeup removal: apply micellar water or cleansing lotion to the cotton pad and press against the eye or face for five seconds before wiping. Pressing first dissolves the makeup before wiping, which requires less mechanical force and reduces eye area irritation. For waterproof mascara, hold the soaked pad against the eye for ten seconds before wiping.

For essence or serum application: some Korean routines use cotton pads with essence (particularly galactomyces-based essences like those from Medi Flower's brand range) to enhance the light exfoliant action during the essence step. This is optional but increases the surface renewal effect of the essence step.

The quality difference between cotton pads comes down to three variables: cotton purity (pure cotton versus synthetic or cotton-polyester blended), linting (whether the pad sheds fibres on the skin surface), and surface softness. Cheap cotton pads are often blended with synthetic fibres to reduce cost, which makes them less soft and more prone to leaving lint on the face - an annoyance when applying toner and a potential issue for people with sensitive skin.
