Manyo Factory Cleansing Oils

A cleansing oil is the first phase in Korean double cleansing. Its job is to dissolve and lift oil-based materials from the skin: sunscreen filters (both chemical and mineral), silicone-based primer and foundation, sebum, and waxy residue from tinted products. Oil cleansers work on the like-dissolves-like principle: carrier oils and emollients in the formula bind to the oil-based materials on skin, allowing them to be rinsed or wiped away cleanly.

The benefit of using a cleansing oil before a foam cleanser is that it dramatically reduces the work the foam cleanser has to do. A foam cleanser working alone against waterproof SPF must use aggressive surfactants at high rinse rates to remove it - this is irritating and drying. When the oil cleanser has already lifted the SPF, the foam cleanser only needs to handle the oil residue, which it does gently and effectively.

Once the oil has emulsified the sunscreen and makeup, add a small amount of water to the face - the oil will turn milky as the emulsifiers activate. Continue massaging for another 10 to 15 seconds, then rinse thoroughly. Follow immediately with the foam or gel cleanser for the second cleanse step. Do not skip the second cleanse: the oil cleanser's job is to emulsify residue, not to leave skin fully clean.

A common misconception is that cleansing oils cause breakouts or are unsuitable for oily or acne-prone skin. A correctly formulated, non-comedogenic cleansing oil does not contribute to congestion when it is rinsed away fully. Oily skin types actually benefit from the double-cleanse method because it removes SPF and sebum more thoroughly than a foam cleanser alone can, which reduces the chance of pore-clogging residue from incomplete cleansing.

The key is thorough rinsing. If any oil cleanser residue remains on skin after the double cleanse, it can contribute to congestion over time. This is a technique issue, not an ingredient issue. Cleansing oils are generally the gentlest way to remove eye makeup and waterproof mascara. For the eye area, use a gentle patting motion rather than rubbing, and work the oil along the lash line with fingertips or a cotton pad.

SPF residue on skin from incomplete evening cleansing has two consequences. First, it forms a partial barrier that reduces the absorption of night-routine actives: retinoids, bifida serums, and niacinamide products all absorb more poorly into skin that still has SPF film on it.
