Alpha hydroxy acids include glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid, and citric acid, among others. They work by reducing the cohesion between dead corneocytes - the cells in the skin's outermost layer - allowing them to shed more evenly. Regular use produces visible improvements in skin texture (less roughness), tone evenness (less post-acne hyperpigmentation), and pore appearance (less visible blockage). AHAs suit skin that is not actively sensitized. Oily skin with texture irregularities, post-acne marks, or dull uneven tone responds fastest - glycolic acid clears dead cell buildup from the follicle mouth and surface. Dry skin benefits from lactic acid specifically, which exfoliates while providing humectant moisture. Normal to combination skin can use any AHA type without issue. Sensitive skin needs a slower introduction - start with lower-concentration formulas and use once per week to assess tolerance before increasing frequency. AHA is not appropriate for broken, sunburned, or actively irritated skin.

BHA (beta hydroxy acid, primarily salicylic acid) exfoliates inside the pore because it is oil-soluble. AHA exfoliates on the skin surface because it is water-soluble. For acne-prone skin with blackheads and congested pores, BHA is the primary exfoliant; AHA addresses the texture and pigmentation that remains after the pore is cleared. For dry or non-acne skin with texture and tone concerns, AHA alone is the better choice. Using both in the same routine is possible but requires care: apply them on different evenings rather than layering in the same session to avoid cumulative irritation.
